see esp MeatballWiki:WebOfTrust - In Collaborative Hypermedia, users are ideally given a large degree of freedom to add, edit, and remove content. Overly strict security mechanisms not only discourage free cooperation, but can fail to protect communities from malicious users. Systems like the Wiki Wiki Web "replace technical security with social and political limits" (Clifford Adams). The Web Of Trust concept attempts to create technical security that is based on the social strength of the community. An important part of the WebOfTrust (and what makes it different from a TrustMetric but the distinction is not always clear) is that it measures trust for each user based on his or her choices. Coronavirus vaccines are coming for kids — but studies have to be finished first. In the early days of the pandemic, experts debated why so few children were becoming infected and why those who did so often had few or no symptoms. They rarely suffered serious illness. It is now clear that when tests were limited, children were simply not being counted. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children make up about 13 percent of U.S. infections. (more)

How to make the best of neuroticism: use it for preparation and winning. Whereas conscientiousness and agreeableness may be related to higher cognitive functions of inhibition and executive control (and the relationship between openness and the brain is largely unknown), extraversion and neuroticism are more associated with the older, “system 1” regions. For instance, many imaging studies have found that neuroticism is related to the amygdala, an old, primal area of the brain responsible for detecting emotions, particularly fear. David Preston is trying to hack the High School system. Every generation thinks school can’t get any worse but somehow we manage... Forget the achievement gap and the union versus reform sideshow—even the best prep school curricula are designed for a world that no longer exists (if it ever did)... I taught at the country’s fourth-largest high school in LA. It had a year-round calendar with three tracks to accommodate five thousand students, most of whom didn’t carry books because they didn’t want to get jumped on the way home. (more)

Waiting for "Superman" is a 2010 American documentary film written and directed by Davis Guggenheim and produced by Lesley Chilcott.[2] The film criticizes the American public education system by following several students as they strive to be accepted into competitive charter schools such as KIPP LA Schools, Harlem Success Academy and Summit Preparatory Charter High School.[3] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waiting_for_%22Superman

Fred Wilson just saw Waiting For Superman, a movie making the case for Education Reform (Educating Kids). The Harlem Childrens Zone is at the center of the story. I Commented. (more)

Geoffrey Canada and his Harlem Childrens Zone Charter School-s have struggled with the same difficulties faced by other urban schools, even as they outspend them. After a rocky start several years ago typical of many new schools, Mr. Canada’s two charter schools, featured as unqualified successes in “WaitingForSuperman, ” the new documentary, again hit choppy waters this summer, when New York State made its exams harder to pass. A drop-off occurred, in spite of private donations that keep class sizes small, allow for an extended school day and an 11-month school year, and offer students incentives for good performance like trips to the Galápagos Islands or Disney World.

A technological fix, technical fix, technological shortcut or solutionism refers to the attempt of using engineering or technology to solve a problem (often created by earlier technological interventions).[1] Some references define technological fix as an "attempt to repair the harm of a technology by modification of the system", that might involve modification of the machine and/or modification of the procedures for operating and maintaining it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_fix (more)

This is the safest indoor space to prevent the spread of COVID-19, according to a mechanical engineer. I am a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. Much of my work has focused on how to control the transmission of airborne infectious diseases indoors, and I’ve been asked by my own university, my kids’ schools, and even the Alaska State Legislature for advice on how to make indoor spaces safe during this pandemic (more)
